ASME’s Congressional Fellows Describes His Capitol Hill Experience

Invited Speaker:

Mahantesh Hiremath, PhD, ASME Fellow, 2013-14 Congressinal Fellow

Earn 1.0 Professional Development Hours*

Abstract:

Dr. Hiremath describes this as a life changing engagement for a working professional and wants to share the details of his daily work, interactions with
the committee staffers and members of the committee. As an Advisor,
Dr. Hiremath assisted the staffers with preparations of a hearing, drafting legislation, writing amendments and making briefing notes.  He also crafted position papers, one-page summaries, pros and cons of issues (e.g. fracking, SMRs etc.).  Dr. Hiremath was appeared as a speaker before the Office of Science and Technology Policy.  When the President’s Budget proposals for FY 2015 were released, he quickly incorporated the science and technology budget into excel spreadsheets, which were then utilized by the Committee to analyzing ‘what-if’ scenarios and greatly helped in drafting Committee’s response.  Dr. Hiremath thinks that he has returned to SSL an enriched person, with empathy for the decision makers on the Capitol Hill.

Come and listen to his story of working in the policy world while supporting the legislative staff with his expertise and industry  experience.

SPEAKER BIO:

Dr. Mahantesh Hiremath recently returned from Washington D.C. after completing a year working as Technical Advisor to the US Congress.  Competitively selected through a nationwide selection process as Congressional Fellow through the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Dr. Hiremath served on the Majority side of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology.  This committee has jurisdiction over all the non-DOD related science excluding the NIH.  He was the only Fellow from a batch of 175 to come from the industry.
