Historic City of San Jose Serves as the Capital of the Silicon Valley

San Jose, the third-largest city in California, has been nicknamed the capital of the Silicon Valley. The city is a hub of the San Francisco Bay area, a sprawling metropolitan area of nearly 8 million people. San Jose dates to 1777 when it was created as a Spanish colony. The city became a thriving farm community, spurring development. San Jose served as California's first state capital once the state became a part of the United States in the mid-1800s.

World War II spurred industrial growth in the area with military projects. This includes San Jose facilities created to build defense vehicles. Following the war, housing was needed for returning soldiers and San Jose became a popular location. The city began an aggressive expansion as a housing boom created an increased demand for land. IBM's decision to establish its West Coat headquarters to the city in 1943, the road was paved for the development of technology-based industries.

The city saw less of dependence on agriculture from the 1960s through today as industrial growth continued. City manager A. P. "Dutch" Hamann encouraged further housing growth during this time, a trend that continued through the rest of the 20th century. Today the city is home to nearly a million people.
