Roaring Camp Railroads Santa Clara: Take a Journey Back in Time

Roaring Camp Railroads takes you back to the days when expansion in Santa Clara County was led by the railroad and not the microchip. In 1875 the Santa Cruz and Felton served as the area's first railroad, carrying tourists to the beach and other local attractions. Roaring Camps Founder F. Norman Clark worked to preserve the region's rich railroad history. Today, the Roaring Camp Railroad takes passengers back to the days before cell phones and iPads through the scenic valley.

Roaring Camp Railroad Information

Trains available for passengers to enjoy as part of the Roaring Camp Railroad include Redwood Forest Steam Trains. The one-hour, round-trip journey will take passengers over trestles and through California's famous redwood groves and on to Bear Mountain. Conductors narrate the fascinating history of Roaring Camp and the area's railroad industry.

The Santa Cruz Beach Train does just what the name suggests. Passengers start their journey from Roaring Camp in Felton or the Santa Cruz beach. Passengers take a scenic route through Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, the San Lorenzo Gorge, a 1909 steel truss bridge and an 1875 tunnel.

Special events in the area include the Redwood Mountain Faire with a wide range of live music presented on two stages. They include Father’s Day - Hats Off to Dad, where one lucky dad gets to relive his childhood and sit in the locomotive's main cab. Another wonderful ride is the Santa Cruz Starlight Evenings in which passengers take an evening train to gaze at the stars while enjoying a relaxing ride through the picturesque Northern California region.

Roaring Camp hosts an annual Fourth of July celebration that includes a tribute the nostalgic days of sock hops and American cooking from the 1950s. The Great Train Robberies also take place during Fourth of July weekend. Hide your valuables as the days of lawlessness are brought back with shootouts, skirmishes and other reenactments of the Old West. Visitors can break for lunch at an authentic Chuckwagon Barbecue.
