The Computer History Museum
The Computer History Museum in Mountain View
The Computer History Museum offers a wide variety of information, exhibits, research and a rich library of multimedia content garnered from some of the most influential people of the computing era.

The Computer History Museum is a museum established in 1996 in Mountain View, California, USA. The Museum is dedicated to preserving and presenting the stories and artifacts of the information age, and exploring the computing revolution and its impact on our lives.

The Computer History Museum holds events year-round dedicated to celebrating computer history. The Museum offers a highly respected speaker series with scholarly historical perspectives by and about the computing industry. Leading innovators, industry giants, engineers and scientists come to the Museum to share their personal insights and stories about developments and discoveries that have shaped our world. The Museum also hosts special events including industry commemorative reunions, technology conferences and computer fairs to capture and preserve stories and artifacts from the people who were instrumental in making computer history.

Former media executive John Hollar was appointed CEO of The Computer History Museum in July 2008. The Museum currently has three unique exhibits highlighting important milestones from the history of computing: "Mastering the Game," a history of computer chess; "Innovation in the Valley," a look at Silicon Valley companies and people; and a Difference Engine designed by Charles Babbage in the 1840s and constructed by the Science Museum.

The museum's major new 25,000-square-foot exhibit, "Revolution: The First 2000 Years of Computing," will open to the public in January 2011.

The Computer History Museum is home to the largest and most significant collection of computing artifacts in the world. This includes many rare or one-of-a-kind objects such as a Cray-1 supercomputer as well as a Cray-2, Cray-3, the Utah teapot, the 1969 Neiman Marcus Kitchen Computer, an Apple I, an example of the first generation of Google's racks of custom-designed web servers, and the first coin-operated video game. The collection comprises nearly 90,000 objects, photographs and films, as well as 4,000 feet of catalogued documentation and several hundred gigabytes of software.

Visiting and Tours
Due to construction on the new exhibit, the museum is open only on weekends through the end of 2010. People can visit their website's Hours and Tours page for open hours and times for specific demonstrations and tours. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.
