Santana Row – A Different Style of Shopping

European-Themed Outdoor Shopping Area Provides Food, Fun, and Fashion

Looking less like a shopping center, and more like a European neighborhood, Santana Row has been attracting South Bay residents and Bay Area visitors since it opened in 2003. The unique architecture and overall relaxed feeling bring shoppers and diners to Santana Row to patronize its multitude of restaurants, retail shops, bars and nightclubs, spas and beauty treatment specialists throughout the year.

Santana Row is technically in the city of San Jose, although a short hop across the street will bring Santa Clara visitors directly into this innovative retail space. Located conveniently across the street from the famous Westfield Valley Fair shopping center (one of the largest and most successful in the U.S.) with its assortment of restaurants and shops, patrons are able to spend an afternoon shopping in two completely separate venues and find nearly anything that they could possibly want.

The South Bay’s Designer Shopping Experience

Sometimes referred to as “The Row” by its frequent visitors, Santana Row has been a veritable who’s-who of designer fashion and home life brands since the start. With infamous names like St. John, Bottega Venatta, Escada, Burberry, Salvatore Ferragamo, Bang and Olufsen, Diesel, and more with retail presence in the shopping center, it’s no wonder why shoppers came along so quickly.

Like any shopping center, Santana Row has had its share of retailer turnover since the first round of store openings, but most patrons agree that the current mix of household and designer names is a hit. Women’s fashion ranging from the elegant such as Cole Haan and Burberry to the trendy and hip such as Diesel and Anthropologie can be found interspersed between the art galleries and dining options along the colorful streets. Men’s favorite casual classics from Tommy Bahama and stylish and refined elegance from Brooks Brothers are only steps from watch shops and outdoor apparel outfitters.

Innovation is in the Design

From its conception, Santana Row has been a unique kind of shopping center. The focus on the aesthetic and design sensibilities is an unusual one for property developers, but there was a firm belief from the early planning stages that shoppers would flock to a place like no other in the South Bay. Visitors now have become regulars at the bars and cafes lining the tree shaded streets, having their morning coffees in one of the many stone-lined plazas and their evening get-togethers seated on the outdoor patios of the restaurants and lounges.

With more than 500 homes (and nearly twice that number of residents) located directly above the retail spaces and restaurants of Santana Row, the atmosphere is more similar to a downtown shopping area in an urban neighborhood than it is to a “mall” as most of us have come to think of them. The homes are a mixture of privately owned condominiums, and apartments leased to residents by the property owners, Federal Realty.

The next time you are in the area and are looking for a fun afternoon or evening relaxing with friends, a night on the town, or a shopping experience that you’ll never forget, check out Santana Row!
